Time flies...

Journal Entry: Thu May 23, 2013, 7:05 PM

Well, since it's been 8 months or so since I wrote my last journal, I figured it was time for an update, if for no other reason, than just to get the last journal off my main page so people won't think that I'm still the Vector CV :) Not that I mind helping, and will still help if anyone needs it

So, gosh, 8 months...my life must be fairly boring, as I don't really have much news! lol Time flies, but I'm not sure where it goes.  I will be having some long-awaited and much-needed surgery on July 4th, and while I'm not looking forward to the actual surgery, I am looking forward to afterwards, when hopefully my quality of life will be a lot better than it has been for the past 15 years or so :fingerscrossed:

I've been very slack in the creativity department lately and haven't done much new art in a while. I have ideas floating around in my head, but just haven't felt like getting them out onto paper/screen...lack of energy, winter setting in here Down Under, laziness...maybe a combination of all of the above :giggle:  I'll get back into it, I always do when I go through a slump like this, but I can't promise when that will be.

Boring journal is boring.

What's been happening with all of you?  Hope all is fine in your worlds

Ha ha - just seen the Simon's Cat webcam on your homepage. They're all brilliant aren't they? My granddaughters scream with laughter at these and then I cry with laughter at them.

Adobe Illustrator is the 'Industry Standard' and most expensive vector program on the market. It has all the bells and whistles that other programs don't have. CorelDRAW is used by a wide variety of graphic designers, and while it doesn't have some of the features that Illustrator has, it's MUCH cheaper, and there are still ways to achieve the desired effects that Illustrator can do a bit easier :) I started using CorelDRAW when I started work for a Signs company, and have stuck with it...to me it's easier to use, but I suppose that's mostly because that's just what I'm used to. If I had learned to Vector with Illustrator, I'm sure I would say the same thing about it. All that said, there is a great free vector program called Inkscape. It's really good, and they are improving it all the time :) I guess my advice would be to try a free program and see if you even like to vector...it's a very different medium to anything else, and it can be tedious, but so much fun at the same time :) If you fall in love with Vectors like I have, then look into purchasing CorelDRAW or Illustrator :D Good luck, and I look forward to seeing what you do!

Well done for teaching yourself Photoshop and now Illustrator too! I am self-taught as well...mostly it's just getting in there and trying it and learning to use the different tools and learning what each tool can do for you :) I don't have much advice for Illustrator, though I do have the program at home, but hardly ever use it because I use CorelDRAW at my job, and I want to learn all I can about doing things in Corel rather than Illustrator. There is a member here, `ChewedKandi who is amazing with Illustrator and I think she has some tutorials in her gallery and also a lot of vector brushes and resources that she has made. Look at her gallery, you'll be amazed by all the things she can do with vectors :) There are many, many other brilliant Vector artists on here. Join a Vector group if you haven't already...#vector-artists is one of the biggest groups but there are others :) You'll be inspired by all the work you see :D

There are some great websites with Tutorials as well, such as [link] . `ChewedKandi is the editor for this website, so it's full of great and useful information for Vector artists :)

Good luck with your Vector adventure, and if there's anything I can help with, I'm here!

Thank you for the :iconstarhugplz:s young Dominique - you were quick off the mark! And yes, winter approaches. I sit here wearing tracky dackys, knee length uggies and a large windcheater. But at least I haven't turned the heater on yet so far this year :fingerscrossed:
