Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning?

Journal Entry: Sat Sep 11, 2010, 6:14 AM

Where was I?

It was late at night here in Australia and I was online chatting to some friends on IRC when one of my friends asked if I had the TV on. I didn't...they said I should turn it on and fast.  I did, and couldn't believe what I was seeing; I couldn't believe it could be happening. This song still brings me to tears each and every time I hear it. It brings back every moment of watching with horror after the first plane hit one of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York; staying up all night, curled up on my sofa in tears watching the news as the second plane hit the second tower, watching my America under attack, and as a third and fourth plane full of innocent people crashed into the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania; more tears tonight as I write this, remembering all those who were lost that day 9 years ago, wondering why there is still so much hate in the world today. :tears:

Where were you?

"Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)"
Sung by Alan Jackson [link]

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Out in the yard with your wife and children
Working on some stage in LA
Did you stand there in shock at the site of
That black smoke rising against that blue sky
Did you shout out in anger
In fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry

Did you weep for the children
Who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below

Did you burst out in pride
For the Red White and Blue
The heroes who died just doing what they do
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself and what really matters

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Teaching a class full of innocent children
Driving down some cold interstate
Did you feel guilty 'cause you're a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her
Did you dust off that bible at home
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Speak with some stranger on the street
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watching
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some stranger
Stand in line and give your own blood
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

The greatest is love
The greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day

I was in my 2D Design class... and people were running into classrooms telling the teachers... my teacher made us all stay in class, even the ones with family in NY/NYC. A classmate and I spent the next hour near tears and we both sprinted out to get to our phones to call our families. It took me 5 hours to call my mother and even longer to get in touch with friends to make sure everyone was okay... Philly evacuated except for a handful of us that didn't have family or friends to stay with outside of the city. A few hours after the second tower fell, we all went out and walked around an almost completely empty city.

Did you know anyone who lost their life in this? It was horrible not being able to get in touch by phone with everyone, wasn't it? Even more so for you and for anyone who had family and friends in NY :( My family was in Texas, Arizona and Washington State, but I was in such a panic to talk to them. There just seemed to be more and more bad news, first the towers, then the pentagon and the other plane, it kept going through my mind that it wasn't going to stop and there was no telling what/where something else was going to happen. But all the phones were off, and I couldn't get through to anyone until the next day.

It must have seemed like something out of a movie, walking around a nearly empty city like that. How long did people stay away, when did they come back home?

Thanks for your comment here, hun, I appreciate it, and I hope everyone you know was alright. :tighthug:

One of my dad's friends was one of the planes - the ones that tried to fight back... and a lot of my friends went to school in NYC... my uncle worked close to the towers as well... it was horrible. The worst part is that town that I'm from is actually halfway between NYC and West Point Military Academy... so if they were going to attack West Point and... didn't make it... guess which towns get crushed... so I was shitting bricks half the day. PLUS it didn't help much that the plane that was shot down, went down in PA sooooo everyone started jumping to conclusions that Philly was going to be attacked as well.

I think anyone would have jumped to that conclusion, especially since no one knew what was going to happen next. I'm sorry your dad lost his friend :( I didn't lose anyone I knew, thank goodness, but my heart goes out to anyone who did.

In a case like this, I don't think it matters so much how close you were to someone involved...just knowing someone at all who was killed really makes this hit home that much harder, and still very sad :(

I heard early morning, New Zealand. getting ready for school. i remember putting my tie on listening to the radio and at first i thought it was a bad joke. The morning radio show was a light hearted jokey show, and all of a suden they were saying all this crazy stuff.
I have always loved america, im pretty sure i'm american in spirit :) our art class had this kinda school trip, and i remember thinking at school in the bus: how can everyone be laughing and happy and normal teenagers, when something this devastating had happened.

 It was sort of the same being here in Australia when it all happened. I'm American, so I think it hit me harder than the Aussies, but I remember thinking that too, 'How can everyone be so normal after this?'

And yeah, my first reaction too was that it was a joke, or at the very least, a very bad accident...it wasn't until the second plane hit that everyone realised it was intentional :(

Thanks so much for your comment on this. I think it's good to stop and reflect on these things, to remember, and it's interesting to know what was going through other people's minds and hear where they were and what they were doing.

great journal entry. I was on the bus home from town when I heard another passenger talking about it on the phone. When I got home the second plane hit. Ill never forget the feeling of pure shock and disbelief. Every time I see that footage I feel true sorrow in my heart.
I imagine all those good peoples faces and their children playing at home the moments before it happened and indeed their and our world changed.
